Over 2,000 people who were in public places of the Western Province, without wearing masks, had been subjected to PCR and rapid antigen tests last week, Police Spokesman, DIG Ajith Rohana said.

One hundred and twenty one such persons had been subjected to testing on Monday as well, he said, adding that 46 had tested positive for COVID-19. They were sent to treatment centres, while their associates were asked to undergo self-quarantine.

With these, 2,438 people have been arrested for violating quarantine laws since October 30, 2020. Police have also taken legal action against 2,250.

DIG Rohana also said that the police were planning to implement a special programme to nab those who violated quarantine laws in the Western Province.

The DIG said the isolation regulation clamped on many parts of Colombo had been lifted and, therefore many more people might gather in public places.

“If health guidelines are not followed we might see the emergence of many sub clusters,” he warned.
