Dayasiri urges Chief Justice to prevent anarchy
SLFP General Secretary MP Dayasiri Jayasekara, Attorney-at-law, has requested the Chief Justice to initiate procedures in accordance with Article 37(2) of the Constitution with regard to the current situation concerning the President and the Acting President.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Justice, Jayasekera has said that the President has left the country in disarray without facilitating the appointment of a proper acting President. The Prime Minister he appointed to this position has demonstrated inability to cope with the country situation as amply seen in the last few days.Jayasekara said that neither the President nor acting President are currently able to carry out their duties properly.
He has asked the Chief Justice to initiate procedures in accordance with Article 37(2) of the Constitution and to discuss the future action with the Speaker.Jayasekara stressed that the democratic rights of the people, fundamental rights, rule of law and preventing a push towards a dictatorship or anarchy all lie within the discretion of the Chief Justice.
